Designer
The designer converts survey data into a complete solar system on paper. Responsibilities include designing the panel layout to maximize usable area and avoid shading, designing the electrical system (string configuration, inverter selection, and protective devices), performing technical calculations for voltage, current, and voltage drop, drawing the single-line diagram, producing the bill of materials, and providing technical support to the installation team.
Required skills include deep electrical and solar knowledge, proficiency with design software (AutoCAD for schematic drawings, SketchUp for layout modeling, PVsyst for yield simulation, and Excel for calculations and cost estimates), as well as precise calculation skills to prevent overcurrent and overvoltage, and a practical understanding of installation so designs are easy to build.
Installation Technician
The installation technician physically builds the system on the roof. Responsibilities include mechanical installation of the racking and panels (ensuring structural integrity and weatherproofing), wiring and electrical connections per the schematic, installing the inverter, distribution board, and protective devices, commissioning and functional testing, client handover and user instruction, and maintaining occupational safety throughout.
Required skills include understanding system principles and reading electrical diagrams, installation and wiring craft (neat and secure), measurement skills for fault detection, basic troubleshooting, teamwork, safe working at height, and discipline and accountability. Tools include a drill, pliers, measuring instruments, ladder, torque wrench, and complete PPE.
O&M Technician
The O&M technician keeps the system running reliably over the long term after installation. Responsibilities include monitoring the system through a monitoring application to detect faults early, performing scheduled equipment inspections, cleaning panels, checking electrical safety (hot spots and leakage current), troubleshooting faults, and producing operational reports.
Required skills include electrical and solar knowledge, inspection and fault-finding skills using measuring instruments, proficiency with remote monitoring applications, and analytical skills to determine why yield has dropped or why a battery is discharging faster than expected. Tools include a multimeter, clamp meter, insulation resistance tester, computer or smartphone, panel cleaning equipment, and PPE.
