BYD (Battery-Box)

Introduction

BYD (Build Your Dreams) is the world’s largest energy and electric vehicle conglomerate, founded in 1995 in Shenzhen. The Battery-Box Premium line is BYD’s most popular residential and small-commercial storage product, classified as an open battery (not locked to a single inverter brand) and entirely high-voltage (HV), compatible with most leading inverter brands.

History & Scale

BYD started with mobile phone batteries in 1995, expanded into electric vehicles in 2003, and is now the world’s number-one EV manufacturer. The renewable-energy storage segment is driven under the BYD Energy Storage brand, with Battery-Box serving the residential and small-commercial segment. A key competitive advantage is BYD’s vertically integrated LFP cell production: BYD manufactures its own LFP cells in-house, eliminating the supplier dependency that most dedicated battery brands carry.

Core Technology

Battery-Box Premium uses LiFePO4 cells manufactured in-house by BYD, built around a high-voltage stacked-tower architecture. The two lines, HVS and HVM, differ in module voltage: HVS uses 102.4 V modules (suited for inverters with an HV port in the 200–500 V range), while HVM uses 51.2 V modules (suited for inverters with a lower-range HV port). The two lines must never be confused or mixed within the same system. IP55 protection and a 96 % round-trip efficiency are notable technical strengths.

Product Lineup

Each HVS tower holds 2–5 modules for 5.1–12.8 kWh, and up to 3 towers can be paralleled for ~38.4 kWh. An HVM tower holds 3–8 modules for 8.3–22.1 kWh, with 3 towers reaching ~66.2 kWh. This capacity range is ideal for three-phase residential systems and small commercial premises. BYD publishes an official inverter-compatibility list on its website; always verify before finalising a pairing.

Positioning in Vietnam

BYD Battery-Box is imported and distributed in Vietnam by several major distributors. The BYD brand is already familiar to customers through its electric vehicles, which builds trust during sales consultations. It is well-suited to three-phase projects requiring medium-to-large capacity that want an open battery to optimise inverter costs.
